Point Reyes Station Visitor Center

For
County of Marin, CA [C3DA]
Description

BACKGROUND:
The rural community of Point Reyes Station in Marin County was in desperate need of a central gathering place with public restrooms and additional parking adjacent to the popular downtown area of shops and farmers' market. Site improvements were phased in coordination with multiple interests. (Update: The County is looking to expand capacity of the septic system to handle extremely high visitor loads on weekends.)

HIGHLIGHTS:
450 SF; Experimental recycled tire chips were installed in leach field trenches of septic system; Most of the Redwood trim was provided by a felled tree in the contractor’s yard.

CHALLENGES:
The natural topography of the site presented a challenge to maintain fully accessible grades on all pathways. Our proposal for pedestrian connection to the street intersection is pending DPW sidewalk improvements. The concrete retaining wall surrounding the playground had to be coordinated through the Committee for a Family-Friendly Point Reyes for installation by separate contractor.

LESSONS LEARNED:
Community involvement from Day 1 made this project a success…even the winning contractor was local and well-known around town. Budget concerns were alleviated by meticulous planning and efforts to locally source labor and materials.
