City of Patterson Fire Station No. 2

Description

BACKGROUND:
The site for Station 2 is set in the West Patterson Business Park and addresses the safety needs of the quickly-expanding City of Patterson. The facility provides fire training grounds (used by local and surrounding companies), public assembly room, firefighter living quarters and Emergency Operations Center within the industrial context of other large scale distribution warehouses in the vicinity.

HIGHLIGHTS:
12,900 SF; 4-story CMU training tower; Bid Alternate 1 w/ Tower, Shop and Medical Supply Room was approved for construction

CHALLENGES:
To keep the building height to a minimum, we worked closely with the structural engineer and selected the low-profile overhead door operators at the App Bays. Placement of rooftop elements, HVAC equipment and roof hatches were closely coordinated with roof screen supports to minimize size of roof screen.

LESSONS LEARNED:
Personally, this project provided a trial-by-fire introduction to the construction administration process and appropriate dealings w/ the contractor. We helped to select the special inspector and construction testing company that was independently hired by the City, which ultimately aided in preventing construction shortcuts by the contractor.
